Readying Your Home for Spring

Is there a better feeling than seeing the first signs of Spring after a long Winter? The smell of fresh dirt and the satisfaction of snow banks getting smaller, Spring really is a beautiful time of year. My favourite part of any change of season, is switching out my wardrobe and home decor--the perfect excuse for a fresh start!

Aside from what we know as a staple of the rainy months--Spring cleaning--there are other easy, and economical ways to embrace the new season. Possibly the easiest way to brighten up your indoor space, is by adding fresh flowers and greenery (try a pot in a fun hue!). Freshen up your front door with seasonal plants and a fresh door mat. You can bring in nature's colour palette by adding fun accent pillows, and remember to switch your heavy throws for lighter, cotton versions. Hibernation be gone--get inspired to cook healthy, seasonal meals with attractive recipe cards, and be ready for casual, al-fresco dining with inexpensive paper napkins and a versatile cutlery holder. And of course, never under estimate the power of a new candle scent to transform your home.

The Decor Department - Tess' Bedroom

My sister Tess is one of those few lucky people who has known exactly what she wants to do with her life for as long as I can remember--a dance teacher and studio owner. And she shows that same confidence with her personal style and decor aesthetic. So when she asked my help turning her room into a more sophisticated space, I knew it would be easy working with someone who is so sure of herself. Coral, fuchsia and white were the requested colours, and she wanted to keep her orange feature wall. Let me tell you, this girl is not afraid of colour and it's fabulously refreshing. Sticking to a modest budget, we rolled up our sleeves and got creative. A few cans of white paint on the three walls, ceiling and trim brightened things up and we had fun painting wood letters (from the Dollar Store!) and making colourful pennants. Of course, signs of her passions are scattered throughout her room, from the pointe shoes and ballet barre, to her gorgeous tea cup collection. I can only hope the space properly reflects her bright and beautiful personality!

Crushing On

My friend Michelle bought me a beautiful cream toque with an oversized fluffy pom pom. I would have never picked it out at the store myself, but as it turns out, it's my favourite go-to Winter hat (gotta love girlfriends who know you better than you know yourself!). So now, I am crushing on all things pom pom in the home. From pillows, to bedding, to curtains; from petite, to extra large; pom poms definitely make a playful statement. And although they are adorable in a children's room (think trim on a bed canopy), I like it best as an unexpected feature in a more sophisticated space.
